GrrlCamp NYC 2008

September 25th, 2007 by comment gloriajw

We are kicking off GrrlCamp 2008. There are two GrrlCamps being started from this list. This GrrlCamp starts now, runs until May 2008, and meets in-person in NYC in May of 2008.

Qualifications:
- Female (willing to voice verify. You’d be surprised that this is necessary, but at times, it is.)
- Programmer, or programmer wannabe.
- Able to meet online weekly for one hour.
- Able to dedicate a few hours a week to this project.
- Willing to read, try, do, roll up your sleeves and design and develop, even if you’ve never done this before.
- Able to travel to NYC in May for the software wrap-up and release (optional). Your expenses = your round-trip flight/ride, and minimal donations for food. Lodging is free, food will be prepared and cooked by participants.
- Willing to work in Python (If we get a Rails following, we may use both).
- Willing to learn Dojo, CSS and HTML for the user-facing interface.
- Willing to release the software to the public, free of charge.
- Willing to provide small bits of support after development is complete.

This is a large project, touching on everything from basic Linux admin, svn setup, LINUX shell, Apache configuration, threading, database schema design and access, process/content management, front end design and development, inter-language data transfer, and the list goes on. If you are willing, this is an outstanding learning opportunity.

If interested, reply to this post with a valid email address, and we will send you an invitation.

Please, no observers/reporters. This is strictly a development group, and all members must be willing to write code.

    sounds great.

I wish someone would do something like this for guys or coed, this sounds like a lot of fun.

  3. gloriajw says:

    Hi Pablo,

Yeah, I do hear this quite a bit. I had several guy friends and guys at work ask if they could attend (beg is more like it). One guy I know offered to wear a dress if I would let him attend. I’m still considering it 8). I could grow this group to be huge if I made it co-ed.

Linux User Groups (LUGs) already do stuff like this, or at least attempt this. All are co-ed, but most only draw males. I am trying to reach out the the female contingent for this reason. Unfortunately, some LUGs are not well organized from what I hear. If you let me know what cities your near, I’ll see if I can find something similar for you, that is well organized. If not, let’s talk on the side about some other things I have brewing. I am always looking for reliable apprentices.

    Gloria

I am in Phoenix, AZ .. we have PLUG, the Phoenix Linux Users Group. I used to be very involved with them but kind of moved out of reasonable travel distances to go to the meetings. They did a lot of install fests and some other events but never really focused on programming at all. Feel free to email me on anything you have available =)

I might be interested in this; more interested if rails instead of python, but still possibly interested if it is python. Any hints about when, exactly, in may the end would be? Oh wait, I just reread the post and saw I’m supposed to say i’m interested and wait for an invitation before nagging for more details.

You say there are two grrlcamps starting up — which is the other one?

I’ve asked several people in our local chapter of the Association for Women in Computing if they’d like to participate. They, and I, have questions:

    What would participants be developing?
    Whats the actual project?

Hi our professor linked this site for the girls in the class. I am interested.

  22. gloriajw says:

Wow! This response is excellent. very different from last year. Thank you all for the interest. I think we may close the group at 20, so it doesn’t get too big. This leaves only a few slots left.
Next week we start to dissect and design. This will be fun!

    Gloria

  23. Barb says:

Please say you have room for me! I’m a wannabe with CSS and HTML skills as well as other web development. I’m very interested in developing my skills in other areas you’ve listed and would adore working with women on a technical project.

  24. gloriajw says:

OK, we are beginning design and development now. We have an amazing turnout, and this project is about to begin. if you see this announcement after this point in time, don’t despair. Some people usually leave for personal reasons, so new people joining at a later time can work under the right circumstances. Please contact us instead of assuming you may not be able to join.

  25. diana says:

Hi, sounds great, please add me to the list of wannabe participants.

  26. Alex says:

Anyone who expressed interest but who did not receive an invite, please email me at hamcferron at yahoo dot com

    thanks so much.

  39. gennipher says:

I’m interested! I already have a little bit of Apache experience, and year plus in Linux Sys Admin and Oracle DBA experience. I also managed a Quality Assurance Team so I could help out there as well. I’d love to finally learn some CSS and Dojo. I just stumbled on this site today so I’m not even a member yet, but I’d love to help. (gennipher.mosley@gmail.com)

  40. edayis says:

This is a great idea. Been a long time coming, and I’d like to be involved in any way i can. I’m a grad student right now, studying Instructional Technology, and this seems to be right up my alley.
    thanks!

You’re awesome, Gloria, for really being hands-on in the education and involvement of women in programming. Thank you. I look forward to being a part of the group.

  43. Sonya says:

  44. emily says:

    Sounds good.

  45. Quincy says:

I would be interested in learning more about the project, if it’s not too late.
I am a 3rd year CS PhD student interested in Educational Technology & HCI.

  46. rihanha says:

This sounds like an awesome project. Have you talked about doing something like this on the West Coast?

  47. gloriajw says:

This group is officially closed, sorry. We cannot manage any more members on this project.

Re: East Vs. West Coast: Members are physically all over the world. Some will meet in NYC. So location is not vital to a project like this, should you want to start your own.

  48. Lindsay says:

I see that this group is officially closed. How do I make sure I get involved in the next one?

  49. gloriajw says:

I am going to discuss next year soon, with the group project manager, since this question is popping up frequently.

  50. debbie says:

I guess I’m way late on this one. Would love to be involved in the next one.

  51. Teeter says:

I’m very interested. I’m a newbie and would love a reason to really push myself to learn. Very interested in rails.
