NYTimes article on Women in Comp Sci
April 16th, 2007 byThe article is called “Computer Science Takes Steps to Bring Women to the Fold.” It discusses the disheartening fact that percentages of women majoring in comp sci have actually dropped from 38% in 1985 to 28% in 2003. Gah!
Some are saying that women are the “canaries in the coalmine,” some say it has to do with abysmal high school AP CS classes, and others say it’s the geek factor. (I think geeks brains are sexy, so I don’t know what they are talking about.)
In my field (specifically control system programming), less than 1% of the programmers are women. Today I was in Las Vegas on the construction site of a museum with my hardhat and my “Life would be easier if we just had the source code” tshirt. (My mom gave it to me.) I feel like took a geek-questioning high school girl out here and said, “Look at all this weird stuff you could do!” she’d think it was pretty neat. sigh…
