Accidental Event Planner …
January 10th, 2007 byTurboGears, CodeMash, Java and .NET: oh my!
My life has been complicated by a bunch of event planning for January. In an attempt to build excitement in the Ann Arbor software development community, I’ve been working on several events, with a little help from some friends.
First, I got Bruce Eckel to come to the midwest to do a keynote for CodeMash. But since he was “here” (as if Ann Arbor and Sandusky are suburbs of one another), I convinced him to do a Java Seminar. He hadn’t done one yet, since releasing Thinking in Java 4th Edition. Bruce had BEEN talking about doing a TurboGears Jam, after all the fun we had in Crested Butte last summer, with the Web Frameworks Jam. Since the creator of TurboGears (Kevin Dangoor) and his co-author of the recent “Rapid Web Application Development in TurboGears” (Mark Ramm) are both in Ann Arbor, Bruce suggested doing the Jam here. Cool. Ahem, but to condense his travel, we schedule the events back to back: starting Jan 14 with TurboGears and CodeMash in the middle, and Java seminar Jan 22-26.
But .NET shouldn’t be outdone! So my business partner and I called up our friend Richard Hale Shaw (.NET bootcamp trainer) and he agreed to do a workshop here the following week, on .NET 3.0.
I figure I’ll be completely crazy by the time his class ends Feb 2.
No, I’m NOT an event planner. I just stumbled into all of this, trying to get our local community to stand up and take notice of what we have … and to build some excitement around the very cool nationally known people we have coming in.
I understand that we have a dozen women signed up for CodeMash. I hope that some of those are “devchix”. If so, PLEASE hunt me down and introduce yourselves. I’ll be running around frantically but also trying to hold down the SRT Solutions booth and help coordinate the Open Spaces part of CodeMash.
And, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE it if some of you would join us starting Sunday at the TurboGears Jam. If you want more info on these events, check out our flyer or email me.
